Pinaaamiyendahan ni Senador Richard J. Gordon ang Republic Act No. 11643 para malawakin ang sakop ng survivorship benefits para sa mga nagretiro nasawing miyembro o retirement-eligible na National Prosecution Service (NPS).
Sa inihaing Senate Bill No. 2487 ni Gordon, chairman ng Senate Justice and Human Rights Committee, layon nito na ang mga maiiwang pamilya ng nasawing NPS members ay mapapangalagaan nang husto.
“The bill aims to expand the grant of survivorship benefits in case of death of a member of the NPS while in actual service, regardless of his/her age and length of service. This is to ensure that the families of our prosecutors will be taken care of when unfortunate incidents befall them,” sabi ni Gordon.
Magugunitang nang masawi si Cavite Assistant City Prosecutor Edilberto Mendoza noong Disyembre 31, 2021 sa sa Trece Martires ang dahilan upang magsagawa ng privilege speech si Gordon para hilingin ang hustisya sa pagkakapatay dito at hilingin ang proteksyon ng pamilya nito.
Sa pinakahuling datos, nasa 115 abogado, huwes, at prosecutors ang nasasawi simula 1972, kung saan 66 dito ay nangyari sa loob ng limang taon.
“Itong mga pagpatay na ito ay spitting on the face of justice. Every attack on the lawyers in the performance of their duties is an attack on the rule of law and our justice system. Our prosecutors and judges should not be intimidated,” sabi ni Gordon.
Nakasaad sa SB 2487 na nais nitong bigyan ng lump sum na limang taon na ibabase sa pinakamataas na sahod ng NPS member.
Samantala, ang mga nasasawing NPS member na prosecutor sa loob ng 15 taon sa gobyerno ay makakatanggap ng 10 taon ng “worth of gratuity”.
