Sinita ng ilang senador ang mga opisyales ng Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) sa masamang idinudulot nito sa Filipino athlete na si Ernest John “EJ” Obiena.
Sa pagdinig ng Senate Committee on Sports, kinastigo ni Senador Pia Cayetano ang mga national sports associations partikular ang PATAFA dahil sa binibigyan ang mga atleta ng administrative task sa halip na isentro sa pagsasanay at sa mga kumpetisyon.
Aniya, mali at hindi dapat itrato ang mga Pinoy athletes na walang kinalaman sa pagsasanay ng mga ito tulad ng nangyari kay Obiena na dumanas ng mental at emotional stress sa akusasyon ng PATAFA kaugnay ng liquidation issues.
“You have assistants to liquidate your expenses for you and we expect our national athlete, who trains eight to 12 hours a day, who lives alone [in] a different time zone, to liquidate on the spot and if he doesn’t, he’s a bad person? And he deserves to be insulted, deserves to be threatened, to be taken out of a sport that he dedicated his life to? Is that how we treat our national athletes?” tanong pa ni Cayetano sa PATAFA.
Samantala, inusisa ni Senador Francis Tolentino ang advertising contracts na pinasok ng PATAFA gamit ang mga Pinoy athletes.
Tinukoy ng senador ang bylaws ng PATAFA na dapat ay pag-aralan ang pinasok na advertising contracts ng sinumang individual athlete o club.
Inihalimbawa pa ni Tolentino ang nabigong kaso ng sponsorship ng MVP foundation, kung saan biglang tumalon ang PATAFA sa gitna ng negosasyon gayung malinaw na isinasaad sa sariling bylaws nito na dapat na pumasok lamang ang mga ito kung ang kontrata ay napagdesisyunan na.
“I underscore the word review. When you say review, it means ‘done after.’ The endorsement is already finished. The contract will be then given to you to review. What is review? You analyze, you reevaluate… so it should not be done in the initial stage and in the middle stage. It should be done after the contract has been negotiated,” giit ni Tolentino.
