Nanindigan si Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri sa Department of Agriculture (DA) na tigilan ang plano nitong mag-angkat ng produktong agrikultura ngayong nalalapit na rin ang panahon ng anihan sa bansa.
Sinabi ni Zubiri na huli na ang nais ng DA na mag-import ng mga produkto sa ibang bansa gayung nalalapit na rin ang pag-ani ng mga magsasaka gayundin ng mga mangingisda dahil sa tapos na ang closed fishing season.
“First it was rice and corn, then pork, beef, chicken, and fish. Now it’s sugar. If we don’t put a stop to this ill-timed importation program, our local sugar prices will be in freefall for the coming weeks. We cannot allow this to happen. Our sugar farmers will be suffering next sugar crop year, with high production costs and lower productivity,” sabi ng senador.
Idinagdag pa nito na sa Negros Occidental lamang, ang millgate prices ng ilang sugar mills ay bumagsak na sa loob ng dalawang linggo.
Inihalimbawa nito ang Victorias Milling Company na bumagsak sa P240 sa bawat 50 kilo ng raw sugar; ang SONEDCO ay P213; ang Hawaiian Philippines and First Farmers na P136, at ang Central Azucarera de La Carlota ay nasa P188.
Habang sa kalapit na isla na Iloilo, ang URC Passi ay bumagsak ng P223 at ang mga millers sa Bukidnon ay nasa P100.
Nabatid na ang DA at ang Sugar Regulatory Board (SRA) ay nagkasundo na magpatupad ng sugar importation program sa Sugar Order No. 3, na naglalayong mapababa ang presyo at supply ng asukal sa merkado kasunod na rin ng epekto ng typhoon Odette.
“Our sugar farmers have been asking for help in dealing with skyrocketing fertilizer and diesel prices since last year, and they have not heard of any interventions from the DA and the SRA. Urea now sells for around P2,400 from just P800 eighteen months ago. Diesel prices have doubled from P27 over the same timeframe,” aniya.
“Now that sugar prices are up because of rising farm input costs, the DA and SRA are coming out with an importation program to stabilize prices. It is ironic that importation is their answer to our farmers’ pleas to mitigate skyrocketing fertilizer prices. This will only sink our farmers toward in more hardships and saddle them with more debts,” paliwanag pa ni Zubiri.
