Makakatanggap ng cash benefits ang mga atletang Pinoy na sumasabak sa 31st Southeast Asian Games o SEA Games sa Hanoi, Vietnam at mag-uuwi ng medalya.
Sinabi ni Senador Sonny Angara, sponsor at may-akda ng Republic Act 10699 o ang National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act, ang mga mag-uuwi ng gold medal sa SEA Games ay makakatanggap ng P300,000, habang ang makakakuha ng silver ay P150,000 at sa bronze medalists ay P60,000.
At sa pagkuha ng unang gintong medalya ni Mary Francine Padios sa Pencak Silat women artistic singles ay awtomatikong makakatanggap ito ng nasabing cash incentives.
“Congratulations to Mary Francine Padios for giving the country its first gold medal in the ongoing SEA Games with her masterful performance in the Pencak Silat women artistic singles finals. We expect to see more victories by our Philippine Team and hopefully, even surpass the 149 gold medal haul in the 2019 games,” sabi ni Angara.
Maliban sa gintong medalya ni Padio, kabilang din sa unang nakakuha ng medalya ang Philippine men’s beach handball team, men’s lightweight double sculls at si Helen Aclopen Talongen (Kurash 48-kg) na nakakuha ng silver; gayundin sina George Baclagan (Kurash 90-kg), Charlie Quelino (Kurash 52-kg), at ang women’s quadruple sculls na nakatitiyak na ng bronze medals.
Sinasabing para sa mga team events na mayroong lima o higit pang miyembro, sinabi ni Angara na ang bawat isang miyembro ay makakatanggap ng 25 porsiyento ng cash incentives sa individual medal winners.
“In the case of competitions with less than five participants per team, they will receive the same cash incentives as individual medal winners and will divide this equally among themselves,” sabi nito.
Nakasaad din sa nasabing batas, na ang cash incentives ay ibibigay rin sa mga coaches ng nanalong atleta na katumbas ng 50 porsiyento ng cash reward sa gold, silver at bronze medalists.
Noong Disyembre 2019, inihain ni Angara ang Senate Bill 1225, na naglalayong dagdagan ang incentives na ibinibigay sa mga national athletes at coaches sa pamamagitan ng pag-amiyenda sa RA 10699.
Sa ilalim ng nasabing panukala, ang mga SEA Games medalists ay makakatanggap ng P400,000 para sa gold medal, P200,000 sa silver, at P100,000 sa bronze.
Habang para sa Asian Beach Games at Asian-level competitions na ginagawa kada dalawang taon na dinadaluhan ng 25 bansa, ang mga gold medalists ay makakatanggap ng cash-incentive na P600,000 mula sa kasalukuyang P500,000; silver medalists sa P350,000 mula sa P250,000; at bronze medalists na P150,000 mula sa kasalukuyang P100,000.
“Sports continue to provide us with, not only entertainment, but also a respite from the problems and challenges we face every day, including the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two years and more recently, the fatigue and stress of the campaign for the national elections. This is why we must continue to recognize the achievements of our athletes, who through hard work and the dedication to their craft, give us inspiration and something to cheer about,” sabi pa ni Angara.
