Hinimok ni Senador Pia S. Cayetano ang mga student-athletes na ihalintulad ang hilig ng mga ito para sa sports sa kanilang mga academics.
Ito ang mensahe ng senador sa mahigit 1,000 student-athletes mula sa apat na rehiyon – Western, Central, at Eastern Visayas, at Zamboanga Peninsula – sa opening ceremony ng Palarong Pambansa Pre-Qualifying Meet sa Cebu City.
Sinabi ni Cayetano, na dati ring student-athlete na sumabak sa volleyball sa Palarong Pambansa, at dating miyembro ng national women’s volleyball team, ang sports ay isa sa mga paraan upang matukoy ang espesyal na talento ng isang estudyante, na dapat suportahan at paunlarin.
“Not every child is academically inclined. Not all can be honor students. So there are students who will shine not in the classroom, but outside. We need to harness and encourage that talent,” ayon sa senador.
Pinaalalahanan din ni Cayetano ang mga student-athletes na huwag limitahan ang kanilang sarili, at ilapat ang disiplina na kanilang binuo bilang mga atleta upang maging mahusay rin sa kanilang pag-aaral.
“I would always tell the athletes, the attitude that you show in the court and in the field, apply that same passion in the classroom,” sabi ni Cayetano na nagsabing hindi imposible na magtagumpay ang mga student-atletes.
“The dream of your parents and your teachers is for you to have a good future, and to be given opportunities, whether it’s in academics, in an office, in a company, or to one day become an Olympian,” sabi pa nito.
Apela pa ni Cayetano sa mga school superintendents na tumulong sa mga mag-aaral na hikayatin na ilabas ang talento at galing.
“Let’s have an open mind, let’s give extra effort to help the child find the place and time where they will shine. And today, obviously, the ones who are here are athletes. Let’s use this talent and interest they have in sports to develop their interest in other things,” giit nito.
