Desisyon ng SC sa territorial dispute ng Makati at Taguig di pa tapos- Rep. Tambunting

Nagpahayag ng pangamba ang isang kongresista sa naging desisyon ng Korte Suprema hinggil sa territorial dispute sa pagitan ng Makati City at Taguig City.

“While I respect the independence and authority of the Court, it is my duty to voice out my apprehensions regarding the potential implications of this ruling on the constitutional prerogative of Congress to apportion legislative districts. I take no sides in this territorial dispute but simply wish to defend the powers which the Constitution bestows on Congress,” sabi ni Parañaque City Rep. Gus Tambunting.

Aniya, ang  naging desisyon ng Korte Suprema, kapag naipatupad, ay epektibong magpapababa sa populasyon ng ikalawang Distrito ng Makati City sa mas mababa sa kinakailangan ng konstitusyon ng 250,000 residente.

“This sets the stage for the potential abolition of a legislative district. I would like to note that the apportionment of legislative districts is inherently a matter that should be decided by the political branches of government. It is difficult to find a question more political in nature than the apportionment of legislative districts, as it directly affects the representation and democratic rights of our citizens,” paliwanag pa ni Tambunting.

“Given the political nature of legislative district apportionment, it is our firm belief that the elected representatives in Congress, who are directly accountable to the people, are best suited to make decisions on this matter. The power to apportion legislative districts is a prerogative vested by the Constitution in Congress. This must be respected,” dagdag pa nito.

Kaugnay nito, nananawagan ang kongresista sa mga kapwa nito mambabatas gayundin sa executive branch, at stakeholders na maingat na suriin ang mga implikasyon ng desisyon ng SC at gumawa ng naaangkop na mga hakbang upang matugunan ang anumang potensyal na paglihis sa mandato ng konstitusyon. 

Giit nito, responsibilidad ng Kongreso na itaguyod ang integridad ng mga demokratikong institusyon at tiyakin na ang mga karapatan ng mamamayan ay protektado.
