Pinagtibay ng Senado ang resolusyon na mariing kinokondena ang patuloy na pangha-harass ng Chinese Coast Guard at militia vessels sa mga mangingisdang Pilipino sa West Philippine Sea at ang patuloy na pagpasok ng China sa teritoryo ng Pilipinas.
Sa Senate Resolution No. 718, na iniakda ni Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri at Senador Risa Hontiveros, hiniling nito sa pamahalaan na kumilos at gumawa ng naaayon para igiit ang karapatan ng Pilipinas sa exclusive economic zone and continental shelf ng bansa.
Nakasaad sa resolusyon ang sentimiyento ng mga senador na nakipagkonsulta sa mga opisyal ng Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) at ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
“We came out with strong consensus yesterday after the discussions with the West Philippine Sea Task Force, together with the AFP Chief-of-Staff General (Romeo) Brawner and DFA Secretary (Enrique) Manalo. And actually, we never watered down the resolution that we filed, we actually strengthened the first resolution that we initially filed with Sen. Risa,” sabi ni Zubiri.
Noong nakaraang linggo, inihain ang Resolution No.659, na iniakda ni Hontiveros na humihimok sa DFA na mag-sponsor ng resolusyon sa harap ng United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), na nananawagan sa China na itigil na ang pangha-harass nito sa mga sasakyang pandagat ng Pilipinas sa WPS.
“I think what happened here is we strengthened the position of the government … And the beauty of this is, with proper consensus and of course consultations among our colleagues, we have come out unanimous,” ayon sa lider ng Senado.
“Also, the resolution articulates the sentiment of the Filipino people, and incorporates the views of responsible executive agencies. Their inputs shaped the final language of the resolution. Although authorship is ours alone, we can say that the text was influenced by Senate-Executive consultation,” dagdag pa nito.
