Pinamamadali ni Senador Francis “Tol” Tolentino sa National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) na madaliin ang mapping ng exclusive economic zone (EEZ) kasunod ng pagkasawi ng tatlong Filipino fishermen sa Bajo De Masinloc noong nakalipas na Oktubre 2.
“Tatlo na ang patay na fishermen natin. We claim national security issues, tatlo na ‘yong maglalamay mamaya. Can’t we fast track this by utilizing the resources of other well-financed countries who are members of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)?” tanong ni Tolentino.
Tugon ito ng senador sa inamin ng NAMRIA na tatapusin nito ang EEZ mapping sa taong 2028.
“It depends on the resources that we have. If we have adequate resources, we can finish it,” sabi ni NAMRIA chief, Usec. Peter N. Tiangco.
Samantala, kinuwestiyon ni Tolentino ang NAMRIA hinggil sa awtoridad nito na pangalanan ang underwater features sa Benham Rise o Philippine Rise nang hindi alam ng Kongreso.
Sa pagdinig ng 2024 budget ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), inusisa ng senador si Tiangco kung ano ang nagtulak dito na i-bypass ang Kongreso sa pagbibigay ng pangalan sa mga natuklasang underwater features sa Benham Rise.
“I think it is about time that we adopt a resolution or an amendment to an existing law that would authorize the Congress to name the names. It should be named after our national heroes or from notable figures who really risked their lives and showed heroism to be part of the Philippine Rise,” sabi ni Tolentino.
Hindi nagustuhan ni Tolentino ang mga ibinigay na listahan na naglalaman ng pangalan ng underwater features sa Benham na hindi alam kung ano ang pinagbasehan.
Kinuwestiyon din ng senador ang ginawng trust fund ng NAMRIA nang walang kaukulang batas na nanggaling sa Kongreso para dito.
Sinabi ni Tolentino na ito ang natuklasan ng Commission on Audit (COA) kung kaya’t dapa na isaayos ito ng NAMRIA.
