Nanawagan si Senador Grace Poe sa mga regulators ng gobyerno at mga telecommunications company (telcos) na palakasin ang kanilang mga linkage para magbigay ng libreng wifi services sa mga nangangailangang pampublikong paaralan.
Sinabi ni Poe na dapat makipagtulungan ang Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) at Department of Education (DepEd) sa mga telcos upang matiyak na ang mga mag-aaral kahit sa pinakamalayong paaralan ay makakaranas ng koneksyon sa internet.
“At a time when the education of our children relies on connectivity, access to the free internet is a crucial need that telcos can help provide,” sabi ni Poe.
“What to telcos could be a drop in the bucket can go a long mile for the efficient learning of our students,” ayon pa sa chairperson ng Senate public services committee.
Sa pagtatanong ni Poe, nabatid na nasa 69 porsiyento lamang ng halos 45,000 pampublikong paaralan ang may wifi access at sa iba’t ibang antas.
“It’s unimaginable for a big population of students not to have access to wifi especially now when we are saying that online education has become part of the new normal,” sabi nito.
“Some may be able to spend a few pesos for wifi for their school works such as research, but how about the others who do not have the means?” tanong pa ni Poe.
Pinagsusumite ng senador ang DepEd ng mga ulat sa estado ng internet connectivity sa mga pampublikong paaralan sa bansa at malaman kung ilan ang nangangailangan malagyan ng internet access.
Aniya, mahalaga ang impormasyon bago pa talakayin sa plenaryo ng Senado ang pondo ng DICT.
Umaasa si Poe expressed na ang mga telcos ay patuloy na magiging katuwang ng gobyerno sa digitalization program ng pamahalaan.
“We believe telcos will always heed the challenge to do more for the worthwhile goal of inclusive, quality education,” sabi pa ni Poe.
