Apat na sasakyang pandagat ng People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) ang nakitang dumaan sa Balabac Strait sa pagitan ng Palawan at Borneo.
Ito ang kinumpirma ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) kung saan tinukoy nito ang PLAN destroyer Luyang III (DDG-168) at frigate Jiangkai II (FFG-570) na nakitang dumadaan sa timog-kanluran sa bilis na 13 knots dakong ala-1:49 ng hapon noong Hunyo 19.
Habang ang dalawa pang PLAN vessels, ang destroyer Renhai (CG-105) at ang replenishment oiler Fuchi (AOR-907) ay namonitor na kumikilos timog-kanluran sa bilis na 15 knots ganap na alas-3:56 ng hapon.
Ayon pa sa AFP, bilang bahagi ng standard operating procedure (SOP) nagpadala ng mensahe sa Chinese Navy vessels.
”Our capability to monitor and respond to such activities is a testament to our commitment to maritime domain awareness and the protection of our territory, sovereignty, and sovereign rights. Rest assured, the AFP remains vigilant in safeguarding our maritime interests,” ayon kay AFP Public Affairs Office chief Colonel Xerxes Trinidad.
Ang Balabac Island ay matatagpuan sa katimugang bahagi ng Palawan kung saan matatagpuan ang isa sa mga Philippine bases na nakatakdang gamitin ng US Forces sa ilalim ng Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).
