Agriculture crisis nararanasan na sa bansa, ayon kay Senador Zubiri

Nakakaranas na ng agriculuture crisis ang bansa dahilan sa hindi maawat na pagtaas ng presyo ng fertilizers at pagkabigo ng Department of Agriculture (DA) na solusyunan ito.

Ito ang sinabi ni Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel F. Zubiri kung saan naaalarma na aniya ito na hindi maawat ang pagtaas ng presyo ng agricultural inputs partikular ang fertilizers na umabot na ng halos triple ang presyo sa loob lamang ng 18 buwan.

“This is by far, the worst scenario that is besetting our farmers and I’ve been getting cries of help, particularly from the sugar industry sector,” sabi ni Zubiri.

Giit nito, buwan ng Oktubre noong nakaraang taon nang kalampagin nito ang DA dahil sa mabilis na pagtaas ng presyo ng fertilizers ngunit hanggang sa kasalukuyan ay wala pang tugon ito.

“In fact, I approved the DA’s budget for 2022, with a colatilla that the DA should submit to the Senate a plan on how to address the problem on high fertilizer prices, and what concrete steps they should make to ensure a cap on fertilizers’ prices,” sabi pa ni Zubiri.

Sinabi pa ng senador na inasahan na ng DA na maglalabas ng agarang plano at medium term and long term plans para sa buong agriculture sector.

Idinagdag pa ni Zubiri na nakatanggap ito ng mga tawag mula sa sugar industry leaders na nababahala sa umabot na sa triple ang presyo ng farm inputs lalo na at nalalapit na ang sugar planting sa susunod na mga buwan.

“Something must be done and I expect the DA and the Department of Trade and Industry to work together to address this,” panawagan pa ng senador.

“I am especially worried about the small sugar farmers that comprise more than 80 percent of our sugar producers. How can they recover from this, let alone be able to till their land for the coming crop year,” dagdag pa ni Zubiri.

Sinabi pa nito na nababahala ito na dahil sa taas presyo ng fertilizers at hindi mabigyan ng proteksyon ang mga magsasaka ay hindi malayong mabawasan ang produksyon.

“I have long pushed for the DA to come up with alternative solutions like organic fertilizers. Furthermore, the DA and DTI must explore the possibility of a public-private partnership in fertilizer production as part of the medium and long term plans. I am committed 100% to ensure that the agriculture industry stays afloat. This is the industry I grew up in as a young boy in my Dad’s farm in Negros Occidental, and as a young man in the fields of Bukidnon. I will continue to protect the agriculture sector,” giit pa ng mambabatas.
