Umapela ang isang kongresista kay Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., na muling buhayin ang Bicol River Basin Development Program Office (BRBDPO) na malaking tulong para mabawasan ang epekto ng kalamidad sa bansa.
Ayon kay Camarines Sur Rep. LRay Villafuerte, pangulo ng National Unity Party (NUP), dapat na ikonsidera ng Malacañan Palace ang pagbuhay muli sa BRBDPO na halos isang dekada nang isinara upang maipatupad ang kauna-unahang regional area development initiative na idinesenyo para sa climate-proof ng mahigit sa 317,000 ektaryang watershed sa nasabing lalawigan.
Tugon ito ng kongresista sa naging pananalasa ng severe tropical storm Paeng kung saan nanawagan din ito sa Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) na madaliin ang pagpapatupad ng dredging facilities sa Bicol para maalis ang putik at basura sa BRB, na isang watershed na ang mahalaga sa economic development,ng rehiyon dahil sa mahigit sa 240,000 ektarya o two-thirds ng basin area nito ay taniman, at ang ilog at lawa ay isang fishing grounds na malaking tulong din para sa mga magsasaka dahil sa irigasyon.
Nabatid na ang BRB ay sumasakop sa 963 barangay sa 50 munisipalidad at syudad sa Camarines Sur, Albay at Camarines Norte.
Ito ay sumasaklaw sa 8 sub-basins o watersheds kabilang ang Libmanan-Pulantana, Ragay Hills, Thiris, Naga-Yabo, Pawili River, Waras-Lalo, Naporog at Quinali na pawang nasa CamSur.
Sinabi ni Villafuerte na ang dredging at desilting ng Bicol River ang mabisang solusyon sa pagbaha sa nasabing rehiyon.
“About 70% of the BRB is in CamSur, which is flood-prone Bicol’s lowest-lying province, making it a catch basin for floodwaters from the other provinces whenever tropical storms pummel our region. We are thus appealing to Malacañan (Palace) to do something about our chronic flooding problem. We are asking the Palace to consider reviving the BRBDPO to oversee the crafting and implementation of climate and disaster resiliency programs to mitigate the impact of future climate-induced natural calamities on an estimated two million people living around the BRB,” sabi ni Villafuerte.
”In the meantime, we are requesting the DPWH to send its dredging facilities to our region to desilt the BRB,” dagdag nito.
