Inaresto ng mga tauhan ng Bureau of Immigration (BI) ang isang professional basketball player na nagtangkang pumasok sa Pilipinas gamit ang pekeng Philippine passport.
Kinilala ni Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco ang nadakip na si Avery Roberto Scharer, 36-anyos, na naharang sa Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.
Nabatid na si Scharer ay dumating sa NAIA sakay ng Philippine Airlines flight mula Canada kung saan nang ipinakita nito ang kanyang American at Philippine passports sa immigration officer sa arrival area.
Sinasabing nagduda ang nasabing BI officer sa Philippine passport nito kung kaya’t inendorso ito sa forensic documents laboratory ng BI para isailalim sa eksaminasyon kung saan lumabas na ang ipinakitang Philippine passport Scharer ay peke.
Nagawa ni Scharer na ilabas sa social media ang akusasyon illegal na ikinulong ito ng immigration authorities nang dumating sa NAIA.
“Our forensic equipment confirmed the suspicion of our officers. The Philippine passport he presented contained tampered pages, including the biographical data page. His attempt to conceal these alternations cannot escape the scrutiny of our inspectors. Posting false information on social media to gain sympathy despite the violation further manifests undesirability. There are no sacred cows, as any foreign national who have violated immigration laws and presented fake documentation will be arrested,” sabi ni Tansingco.
Si Scharer ay kasalukuyang nai-turned over sa BI legal division para sa inquest proceedings dahil sa paglabag sa Philippine Passport Act at mananatili ito sa BI’s detention center sa Bicutan, Taguig.
Sa record, si Scharer ay naglaro sa iba’t ibang collegiate, amateur at professional basketball leagues sa Estados Unidos at sa Asia.
Taong 2015, nang ma-draft si Scharer sa Wang’s Basketball Couriers sa Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) D-League.
