Nanawagan si Bagong Henerasyon party-list Rep. Bernadette “BH” Herrera ng mahigpit na responsableng pamamahayag, lalo na kapag ang coverage ng media ay may kinalaman sa mga sensitibong kaganapan at usapin.
Sa kanyang privilege speech, binanggit ng Deputy Minority Leader ang pangangailangan ng mga mamamahayag na kumpirmahin muna ang mga impormasyon bago isulat o iulat sa radyo o telebisyon ang isang pangyayari
Isang partikular na insidente na tinukoy ni Herrera ang ulat ng GMA NEWS sa sunog sa Carmel 3 Subdivision sa kahabaan ng Tandang Sora, Quezon City noong Mayo 17.
Ang ulat ay naglalaman umano ng hindi na-verify na impormasyon tungkol sa mga aksyon ng isang senior citizen, si retired BGen. George Ancheta, sa panahon ng sunog.
“Unfortunately, the on-scene reporter was already relaying what BGen. Ancheta was supposedly doing, even before the facts could be fully confirmed,” ani Herrera.
“According to eyewitness accounts, however, it appeared that he was not able to leave his residence at all, contrary to what was being reported. Even worse, the reporter seemingly announced his demise, even before it was officially confirmed,” dagdag nito.
Binanggit ni Herrera na ang mga sensitibong impormasyon tulad nito ay dapat na ipinaalam muna sa malapit na pamilya bago makarating sa media, at bigay ng mga kinauukulang awtoridad.
“In the United States, for instance, it is mandated that the immediately family must first be aware of a member’s demise before it is announced publicly through media. Up-to-date reporting is crucial, of course, but there must be some ethical guidelines to avoid over-stepping boundaries,” sabi pa ng kongresista.
Binigyan-diin din nito ang kahalagahan ng pagpapakita ng paggalang at pakikiramay sa mga nagdadalamhating pamilya sa mga oras ng kalamidad tulad ng mga aksidente, t krimen.
“Let us work together to ensure that our media serves as a beacon of truth, fostering a society that is well-informed, compassionate, and just,” ani Herrera.
